We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.
Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
The couple face the sort of issues that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on today.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
