Micky van de Ven Brace Ends Everton's Run at New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
