Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
