Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
However, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen information.
