Everyone is Encouraged to Become the Extra Haim Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a text pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple high-profile fans have also begged for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals often depict them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage young girls to form a group."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
